TORG-MAG Vol 1 Issue 1, PP. 4-6

Introduction and Background

a. Can you please introduce yourself and provide some background on your journey to becoming the Founder and CEO of the professional platform for operating theatre staff?

Certainly, I’d be delighted to share my journey. My name is Adebusola Adenike Owokole, and my career in healthcare has been both fulfilling and dynamic. Born and bred in Nigeria before relocating to Ireland, I have a passion for patient care and a deep-seated commitment to making a positive impact on global healthcare systems. Over the years, this passion has driven me to take on roles that extend beyond my routine. I left the operating room environment (Orthopaedics Trauma & Spines Surgical Specialty) and transitioned into hospital management role and programming after about 17 years in the Operating Theatre environment. In this role, I took on the responsibility of overseeing a multidisciplinary team, ensuring adherence to protocols, and fostering a positive work environment. The decision to venture into management was driven by a desire to contribute to the broader aspects of healthcare delivery. Witnessing the challenges and opportunities within the operating theatre environment, I became increasingly focused on creating a supportive platform that would unite professionals globally.

Motivated by this vision, I founded The Operating Room Global (TORG), a professional platform for operating theatre staff of all disciplines. As at the time TORG was founded in 2015, there was no similar platform online. The motivation behind creating TORG was rooted in the belief that a centralized space for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and continuous learning could significantly enhance the development and collaboration of operating theatre professionals on a global scale. The platform became a hub for sharing experiences, accessing the latest advancements, and building a community that transcends geographical boundaries.

As the Founder and CEO of TORG, I have had the privilege of leading a team of dedicated professionals who share the same passion for elevating the standards of operating theatre practices.

b. What inspired you to pursue an initial operating room career?

My mother was a nurse-midwife before her retirement, and seeing the satisfaction she feels every day by helping people in her job while I was growing up inspired my own interest in the medical field. I knew from the time that I was very young that a healthcare career was something I wanted to do with my life.

I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of healthcare settings, which included hospital, operating room, home health, and primary care environments and have enjoyed the experience of learning the routines in each type of facility.

In my early career, during my clinical posting into the operating room, I developed a sense of curiosity into why the scrubbed team always robed and masked mysteriously. As I have always loved a good challenge, this enhanced my pursuit of a career in the field.
